20 youth from Prizren, Peja and Prishtina region visited two cultural heritage sites and one of them in Gracanica which is protected under UNESCO, where we discussed the importance of protection of cultural heritage and promotion of Roma, Ashkalia and Egyptian’s cultural heritage.
Do you remember the police-brutality case in Košice, Slovakia, where police officers forced six Romani boys into violent, abusive and inappropriate behavior against each other, including loosing dogs on the boys?
Well, it’s been a decade since this crime occurred and there is still no justice for these Romani boys – victims of the cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment at the hands of the police officers.
Given the gravity of this injustice, participants in the first Roma Leadership Academy “Nicolae Gheorghe” have formed an informal coalition and sent letters of concern to the Slovak embassies in their countries.
Our coalition includes Roma from North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Romania and Ukraine, demanding justice for their Romani brothers in Slovakia.
Let them know that an attack on any of us – an attack on any human being – is an attack on all of us!
Stand up for justice! #Romalivesmatter!
In the scope of the third objective “youth empowerment and awareness-raising,” Mr. Gazmen Salijevic held one-day training on combating discrimination, promotion of human rights activism and most importantly how can the youth become the next generation Human Rights activists.
This activity was organized by the RV Kosovo students in cooperation with ORCA.
19 November 2019 – Together with the Members of Civil Society Organizations from the Municipalities of Obilic/Obiliq and Vushtrri/Vucitrn (Priluzje) organized a study visit at the RVK office in Prishtine where we discussed the mechanisms for protection and promotion of minority rights in Kosovo. RVK Programme Manager Mr. Gazmen Salijevic discussed with the participants the main mechanisms in Kosovo for Human Rights Protection.
The legal framework after Kosovo’s independence in 2008 guarantees minority communities, among other rights, the right to political representation. The Constitution of Kosovo and the Law on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Communities constitute the core legal framework for community rights in Kosovo. However, their implementation remains problematic. In this regard the Roma Versitas Kosovo will create a baseline study to determine self-awareness of fundamental rights amongst the Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian Communities. 300 questionnaires will be distributed and filled out through outreach to 100 community members respectively in the Pristina, Peja and Prizren regions. These questionnaires will assess: (a) human rights challenges faced by Roma, Ashkali and Egyptians in Kosovo; (b) awareness of their own human rights by Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian Communities; (c) understanding and capability of accessing mechanisms for the enjoyment of such rights.
This project is supported by the U.S Embassy in Prishtina and Implemented by Roma Versitas Kosovo.
